Suresh Nanda, son of former Indian Navy chief Admiral S.M. Nanda, is one of the biggest arms dealers in the country.

Suresh Nanda has also been accused of receiving Rs 4 million ($99,943.82) in kickbacks after a deal to purchase Israeli Barak missiles was signed during the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.  His son, Sanjeev Nanda is accused of mowing down six people in the capital with his BMW car in 1999.

The $100 million (Rs 3.9 billion) deal had come under the scanner after it was alleged that the then Defence Minister George Fernandes had overruled, at the behest of Suresh Nanda, the opinion of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that it could develop a system similar to the Barak. In March 2008, the CBI conducted searches at premises belonging to  Suresh Nanda and recovered cash amounting to Rs 3.2 million from his  residence.

Study is to expose Sangh Parivar’s “real agenda”

NEW DELHI: A new study conducted by the U.S.-based Campaign to Stop Funding Hate (CSFH) has sought to expose the “duplicity” of the Hindu Students Council (HSC) — an organisation that is gaining currency among Indian-American college students across American campuses.

Briefing mediapersons here, Biju Mathew of the CSFH said while the HSC claimed to have severed its ties with the Sangh Parivar after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, “there is a long and dense trail” of connections that establishes a continuing relationship. The trail included tax returns of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), filing with the U.S. Patents Office and Internet domain registry information.

According to Mr. Mathew, the websites of practically every key Sangh Parivar organisation — the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the VHP and the Seva Bharati included — goes to the same cluster of servers located in California: the Global Hindu Electronics Network of the HSC, “making it the basis of the Sangh’s electronic infrastructure.” Also, till 2001, the VHPA was listing the HSC as its project eight years after the students’ organisation had declared itself an independent entity. The current top brass of the Sangh Parivar in the U.S. were from the HSC which was founded as a VHPA project in 1990.

Explaining the rationale of this study conducted over 15 years, Mr. Mathew said: “For some reason, the Indian diaspora like people here in India do not understand the duplicity of the Sangh Parivar. They pay lip service to secularism. We want to make students aware of their real agenda.”

He said the HSC was growing in the United States because of that country’s policy of multiculturalism meant to protect minority communities such as Indian-Americans.The Hindu

The NDTV office damaged by activists in Ahmedabad. AHMEDABAD: Saturday’s attack on the NDTV Ahmedabad office by “Hindu Samrajya Sena” activists has been condemned by almost all sections, including leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and other Sangh Parivar outfits.

A Bajrang Dal spokesman said the Sena had nothing to do with his organisation. The Sena leader, Ashok Sharma, against whom NDTV has lodged a police complaint, was once an activist of the Dal, but he was thrown out of it several years ago, he said.

The attackers were protesting against the channel including painter M.F. Husain in its SMS poll for award of Bharat Ratna.

This was not the first time the Sena targeted the painter. About eight years ago, the “Doshi-Husain Gufa” on the Gujarat University campus, named after architect Balkrishna Doshi and Mr. Husain, was vandalised by the Sena activists. They were protesting against alleged painting by Mr. Husain of Hindu goddesses in the nude.

According to NDTV sources, a group of Sena activists visited the office a couple of days ago and enquired about reporters. They left on being told that the journalist staff were away in Delhi to attend a bureau conference.

However, the activists, while leaving, told other staff members that they should ask the head office to withdraw Mr. Husain’s name from the SMS poll list.

On Saturday morning, the activists came with some banners and posters demanding that NDTV “apologise to the nation” for including the painter in the contest as he was “anti-Hindu.” After vandalising the office premises, they put up a banner at the entrance and locked the main gate from outside.

NDTV filed a complaint with the police against 20 persons besides Ashok Sharma.

Disapproving of the attack on the NDTV office, BJP president Rajnath Singh said: “Media is the fourth pillar of democracy. Such things should not happen.”

Mr. Singh told reporters that he was confident that Chief Minister Narendra Modi would order a probe and take appropriate action.

Intolerance: Congress Deploring the “climate of intolerance,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said: “If you cannot air your views with freedom, then it is a very sorry phase you have come to. Ultimately this is what fascism is all about. This is what intolerance is all about.”
